PICHE (short film)

This piece is a funny but unsettling reflection on the current state of the Canary Islands.
Piche is the Canarian word for "tar". In spite of boasting one of the biggest tourism industries of Spain, the Canary Islands are the territory with the highest extreme poverty rate in the country.
Many islanders feel that within a few years their land will be nothing but tar and concrete, flooded as they are by construction projects that see the light of day via wobbly-at-best approval processes. The island of Tenerife, for example, is set to end up with things like a 650,000 square meter race track project and 12 golf courses, while there are food shortages and water supply cuts, as well as a severe housing crisis driven by a market dominated by foreign capital and purchases destined for tourism. Piche can be seen on Vimeo.

PICHE will premiere in November, at the 2023 La Pinochera Film Festival in the Canary Islands. It has also been selected to compete for Best Independent Canarian Work at the FICINDE 2023 (The International Independent and Auteur Cinema Festival of the Canary Islands).
