Las Marías

Las Marías is a bilingual education project that I co-founded in New York City in 2016 with Lauren Dapena. It was composed of workshops and independent discussion groups, as well as of an online resource of introductory feminist materials . As big believers in civil, off-line discourse we developed, ran and supported workshops to connect feminist ideas with practical everyday issues. Critical pedagogies were applied to the workshops which were made additionally engaging through collective intersectional analysis of societal issues and pop culture (viral videos, tweets, songs, memes, etc.)

As our primary audience we addressed adolescents and young people unfamiliar with feminism, but included people from all different types of backgrounds.  The workshops were conducted in English and/or Spanish.

Some of the partners and organizations that Las Marías has worked are The Brooklyn Public Library, The Door, Loisaida, Pioneer Works, El Puente, Harlem’s YouthAction YouthBuild, the Latinas On the Verge of Excellence Mentoring program, and the Open Meadows Foundation.

In 2023 Las Marías has resurrected and pivoted to engage in other research/action projects.
